We're currently weighing two community mods for the server: Q2Eaks,
a lightweight set of gameplay tweaks, and MuffMode, a more
comprehensive competitive ruleset overhaul. Both bring useful quality-of-life features, and
we want whichever we adopt to fit the spirit of this server before rolling it out. No decision
has been made yet — stay tuned for updates.
Elo System
The Elo rating system is a method originally designed for ranking chess players based on
head-to-head results. Each player starts at 1000 points.
When you frag someone, you gain points and they lose points. The amount depends on the
rating difference — beating a higher-rated player earns more points than beating a
lower-rated one, and vice versa.
Applying Elo to a multiplayer free-for-all deathmatch
is more challenging than a simple 1v1 scenario. In a typical map, a strong player faces
multiple opponents simultaneously, which can amplify rating swings in ways that don't
always reflect true skill. Balancing this is an ongoing process.
To address this, a 200-point spread cap was recently
introduced for real player matchups. Here's how it works using a 1500-rated player
versus a 1000-rated player as an example:
When the stronger player (1500) wins, the actual ratings
are used — the gain is very small (+0.85) since the outcome was heavily expected.
When the weaker player (1000) wins the upset, each player
sees the opponent capped at 200 points away from themselves — so the 1000 player sees
a 1200 opponent and the 1500 player sees a 1300 opponent, limiting the swing to ±12.16
instead of a much larger number.
Bot matchups use a reduced K-factor (K=2 vs K=16 for real players) so farming bots
has minimal impact on your rating. Further adjustments to the Elo system may be made
as the player base grows and more data is collected.
